Diane Madl – Olympian, Coach, Trailblazer

Summary

Diane distinguished herself in field hockey, basketball, and softball at Crestwood before playing field hockey at the University of Connecticut (UConn) from 1985 to 1988. At the University of Connecticut, she was instrumental in winning the NCAA Division I National Championship in 1985 and earned All-America honors in 1987 and 1988, along with the Honda Broderick Award given to the top field hockey player in the country.

Diane also played Varsity Basketball for UConn for two (2) years under legendary coach Geno Auriemma

She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1989.

Madl's athletic prowess extended to the U.S. National Team, participating in the Olympic Games in 1996, among other international competitions. She has also significantly contributed to U.S. Field Hockey through coaching at various levels and earned her U.S. Field Hockey Level III Coaching Accreditation in 2009.

Diane was ranked #3 in the Citizens Voice list of greatest athletes in the history of the Wyoming Valley.  She was the highest ranked woman on the list.

Beyond her remarkable personal achievements, Diane Madl is celebrated as a pioneering force behind Northeast Pennsylvania's emergence as a national epicenter of field hockey excellence. Her groundbreaking success illuminated the region's potential, paving the way for it to become a fertile ground for field hockey talent. Since Diane's spotlight on Northeast PA, the area has become synonymous with producing elite field hockey talent, including multiple Olympians and U.S. National Team members, alongside generating hundreds of Division I field hockey scholarships. Diane's legacy extends far beyond her own accolades; she has fundamentally transformed the landscape of field hockey in the region, inspiring a new generation of athletes to reach unparalleled heights.

Trailblazing Impact

Diane stands as a pioneering figure in the evolution of high school girls' field hockey in Northeast Pennsylvania. Her exceptional talent and recognition as the region's first "blue-chip" recruit marked a significant milestone in local sports history. Diane's discovery and subsequent achievements on the national stage spotlighted Northeast Pennsylvania as a fertile ground for field hockey talent.

Her trailblazing journey catalyzed a remarkable trend, leading the way for over a hundred girls from Crestwood alone to compete in field hockey at the Division I level in the years that followed. This movement extended beyond her alma mater, as hundreds more young women from the region went on to compete in college as well. Diane's influence was instrumental in transforming the local landscape of high school field hockey, leading to an increased recognition of the region as a hotbed for emerging talent.

Thanks to Diane, her early achievements, and the spotlight she brought to the area, Northeast Pennsylvania witnessed a surge in athletic scholarships awarded to its female athletes. Her legacy not only paved the way for future generations of field hockey players but also significantly contributed to the growth and development of the sport within the region, ensuring that hundreds of young women received opportunities to excel and further their athletic and academic pursuits through field hockey.

Diane resides in Providence, RI.  She is the daughter of Ruth Ann and David Madl who

still reside in Mountain Top.  She has 2 brothers, David and Dan, and a sister, Donna Kehl.

Matt LaVigna – Secret Service Agent, Cybersecurity Chief

Summary:

Matt's career spans over three decades with significant contributions in the field of law enforcement and cyber-security. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Legal Studies, he joined the United States Secret Service, where he took on roles ranging from a Special Agent investigating financial crimes to a Counter Assault Team Leader protecting past and current Presidents of the United States. Matt's journey in the Secret Service included international assignments, instructional roles in law enforcement academies worldwide, and significant contributions to the financial security of the elderly through legislative support. Transitioning from government service, Matt became the CEO of the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA), significantly impacting cybercrime prevention and contributing to national and global cyber-security initiatives.

Experience:

United States Secret Service (1987 - 2013): Matt started his career as a Special Agent in the Pittsburgh field office, where he focused on financial crimes. He distinguished himself early by becoming the youngest ever graduate of the Counter Assault Team school, subsequently serving as Team Leader. This prestigious role was devoted to protecting the President of the United States, highlighting his exceptional skills and dedication. 

During this time period, Matt played a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, as well as then-current Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Matt then transitioned to the New York Field Office, tackling an array of financial and organized crimes, along with counterfeit currency investigations. Matt's expertise and commitment took him around the globe, with over 30 international assignments in notable locations such as Russia, Europe, and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield.

In addition to his protective duties, Matt contributed significantly to law enforcement education, serving as an Instructor at International Law Enforcement Academies in Budapest, Hungary; Bangkok, Thailand; and San Salvador, El Salvador.

His impact extended into policy and legislative areas, notably as a Regional Counterfeit Coordinator at Secret Service Headquarters and as an Investigative Fellow for the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. In the latter role, he was instrumental in planning and coordinating a Senate hearing on the financial exploitation of the elderly and contributed to Senator John Breaux's Elder Fraud Legislation.

Department of Homeland Security (2003): Matt was acknowledged as a Founding Member while assigned to DHS Secretary on Tom Ridge's staff.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Pittsburgh Field Office: Matt led all regional operations in Western PA and West Virginia, established the first Pittsburgh Electronics Crimes Task Force, and spearheaded a cybercrime investigation that resulted in the arrest and conviction of the most prolific underground cyber-hacker in the world at the time.  This case generated multiple non-fiction books and TV documentaries.

CEO, National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA): Under Matt's leadership since 2015, the NCFTA has been instrumental in preventing significant cyber crime financial losses and facilitating numerous cyber-criminal arrests worldwide.

Personal Data:

Matt was a 3-sport standout athlete in high school.  He was a nationally recruited football player who went on to play for the University of Pittsburgh for four (4) years.   He lives in the Pittsburgh area with his wife, Gail (Roche) LaVigna, Crestwood Class of ’82.  They have three (3) daughters. His Father Bill and in-laws Bill and Norma Roche still reside in Mt. Top.

Bob Hines – Astronaut

Summary:

Bob Hines was selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. He has served more than 23 years in the United State Air Force (USAF) as an instructor pilot, fighter pilot, and a test pilot. Before his selection in 2017, he was serving as a Research Pilot at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He has accumulated more than 4,000 hours of flight time in 50 different types of aircraft and has flown 76 combat missions in 3 different aircraft types while supporting contingency operations around the world. Hines served as the Pilot on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station, which concluded on Oct. 14, 2022.

Education:

Bob graduated from Crestwood High School in Mountaintop, Pennsylvania, in 1993. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Boston University (1997). Following graduation from U.S. Air Force (USAF) Test Pilot School (TPS) he was awarded a Master of Science in Flight Test Engineering (2008). He went on to complete a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Alabama (2010). He has also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Air War College.

Experience:

Upon graduation from Boston University, Bob worked as a telecommunications engineer at Fidelity Investments, Boston, MA. After being accepted to USAF Officer Training School, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1999.  He went on to attend Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi. Upon completion of Pilot Training, he attended USAF Pilot Instructor Training and returned to Columbus AFB as a T-37 instructor pilot where he became a rare first-tour Evaluator Pilot. Bob’s next assignment was to fly the “Mighty” F-15E Strike Eagle. Following initial F-15E training at Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base, NC, Hines and his family moved to Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, United Kingdom where he flew missions throughout Europe supporting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He also deployed to the Middle East and Africa in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

While at RAF Lakenheath, he was selected to attend the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, CA as part of Class 07B. Hines’ follow-on test assignment was to Eglin AFB, where he served as an F-15C/D/E Experimental Test Pilot. He was also selected to fly the U‑28 on an overseas deployment in support of Special Operations Forces. Hines went on to serve two assignments with the Air Force Reserves while acting as a Flight Test Pilot for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In the Reserves, he served as the Wing Plans Officer for the 147th Fighter Wing at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, Fort Worth, TX and the first F-15 Developmental Test Program Director with the 84th Test and Evaluation Squadron at Eglin AFB, FL where he continued to perform flight test on all models of the F-15.

In 2012, he was selected as a Research Pilot at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. In this role, he qualified as an instructor in T-38N. He also flew science missions in the WB-57 and the Gulfstream G-3 as well as Parabolic Missions in the C-9.

In 2017, he was selected as an astronaut candidate. Following ASCAN training, Hines was assigned to the Exploration Office where he served as the astronaut technical lead for Orion as well as the astronaut representative on the Orion Cockpit Working Group. Upon establishment of the Human Lander System Program, he served as a handling qualities and flight control specialist. He also assisted HLS teams in cabin design and human factors assessments for the next generation of lunar landers. 

NASA Experience:

Hines completed his first spaceflight as the Pilot on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission, having logged a total of 170 days in space over his two increments, Expedition 67 and 68.

Bob and his wife, Kelli, have three daughters. Bob’s father and step-mom, Robert, Sr., and Melody Hines and his mother and step-father, Lynne and Tom Swider, reside in Harrisburg.

Dr. Jim Cybulski – Inventor, Executive, Visionary

Summary: 
Jim is an avid inventor and serial entrepreneur. He holds over a dozen patents and has co-founded three startup companies. As a Mechanical Engineering PhD student at Stanford University, he spent years visiting remote villages across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Madagascar, and India as part of his pathfinding activities for developing novel, low-cost instruments. His ambition has been to improve global access to scientific data – or in other words, to “magnify curiosity worldwide” – for the benefit of humanity through improved healthcare, education, and more. One such innovation is the Foldscope, a paper microscope providing 2-micron resolution for less than $1 in parts. Upon completion of his degree, Dr. Cybulski co-founded Foldscope Instruments, Inc. and set up the company’s exclusive factory in China. The  company has distributed 1.8 million Foldscopes to over 160 countries worldwide. 

Education: 
Jim graduated from Crestwood High School in 1997. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science from Lehigh University with majors in Physics and Mechanical Engineering in 2002.  He then went on to earn a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2004. In 2016, Jim received is PhD from Stanford University, also in Mechanical Engineering.

Experience:
During his high school years, Jim spent a lot of time tinkering with prototypes and challenging mainstream notions in science. Some of the concepts he explored include: a perpetual motion device, a flying machine which mimics a bird’s wings, electrolysis, a wave and tidal energy machine, a tornado simulator, the “circumcenter instrument” (a mechanical tool to find the center of a circle given its circumference, inspired by geometry class taught by Mrs. Fraind), and various designs for automatic transmissions (inspired in part by the Calculus class taught by Mr. Boone). These formed an invaluable basis for years of innovations and explorations to come.

During his undergraduate studies at Lehigh University, Jim engaged in a number of research projects, including: statistical physics investigation of “1/f dynamical systems” using piles of glass beads, investigation of how to create an inversionless laser, ultrasound detection using fiber optic Bragg, and further investigation of automatic transmission designs developed during high school.

Subsequently, Jim studied negative index of refraction systems for his Master’s degree work at MIT. He carried out mathematical and empirical investigations of systems that could achieve a negative index of refraction, which included significant experience with microfabrication techniques used in the silicon industry to produce microchips. 

To gain industry experience, Jim then joined Intel as a packaging engineer, but soon returned to academia to pursue a PhD under an NSF research fellowship. Jim paused the PhD work to start two medical device companies – one which developed an improved FNA tool for pancreatic biopsy, and another which developed a FDA-approved visualization tool for arthroscopy. After work with these startup companies was completed, Jim returned to the PhD program at Stanford. 

Under Prof. Prakash’s mentorship, Jim worked on a number of innovations in the “frugal science” space, including various low-cost designs that served as microscopes and/or centrifuges. The driving question which inspired the invention of the Foldscope was, “What is the best microscope you can build for under $1 in parts?” In the early days of the project, ideas for the low-cost microscope were sketched down on paper. These sketches struck a chord. Although sketching on paper was initially simply practical, it also alluded to a critical revelation in the search for a low-cost medium: paper!

Dr. Cybulski co-founded Foldscope Instruments, Inc., a company devoted to the development and manufacturing of low-cost tools for science research and education. He created the original and manufactured designs for a paper microscope product ($1 per microscope) through extensive prototyping and testing. The company has distributed 1.8 million units to over 160 countries, 

Awards:
Jim was co-recipient of the Golden Goose Award in 2022, presented to the Foldscope inventors by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for their serendipitous breakthrough. Dr. Cybulski has publications in PlosONE, Nature Physics, and the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has given numerous poster presentations and talks, including an award-winning poster at Stanford Optical Society, and an invited talk at Pittcon in Pittsburgh, PA. He has received multiple fellowships and scholarships, including Fogarty Global Health Equity Scholars Fellowship, MIT Shapiro Fellowship, National Science Foundation Fellowship, Goldwater Scholarship, and Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship. 

Personal Data: 
Jim is a runner and an athlete (dating back to the track and field days at Crestwood High School). He has completed two marathons and a number of triathlons, including a full distance Ironman triathlon. Jim and his wife, Wenying Pan, have one daughter (Jane, 3 years old). They live in Cupertino, CA

Major General David C. Hill
2-Star General – U.S. ARMY

Major General David C. Hill currently commands the United States Army War College in Carlisle, PA, responsible for educating and developing leaders for service at the strategic level while advancing knowledge regarding ground forces’ role in achieving national security objectives.

In his immediate prior assignments, Maj. Gen. Hill served as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Central.

Maj. Gen. Hill commanded the Transatlantic Division of the USACE, in Winchester, Virginia, providing engineering and construction services in the Middle East and Central and South Asia. He also commanded the Southwestern Division of the USACE, in Dallas, Texas, providing public engineering services and stewardship of water resources across all or part of seven states.

Other command assignments include the 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, TX; Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX; Headquarters Company, 16th Engineer Battalion, Giessen, Germany.

Additional previous assignments include Director of the Office of the Chief of Engineers in the Pentagon; Human Resource Manager, U.S. Army Senior Leader Development Office, Washington, DC; Chief of Training/Operations, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX; Operations Officer, 299th Engineer Battalion, Fort Hood, TX; Combat Engineer Trainer, National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA; Platoon Leader, 37th Engineer Battalion, Fort Bragg, NC.

Maj. Gen. Hill holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College. He received his commission in 1990 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Hill was Crestwood’s first graduate to attend West Point.

Maj. Gen. Hill’s awards and decorations include three Distinguished Service Medals, three Legion of Merit Medals, three Bronze Star Medals, five Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and Army Staff Identification Badge.

While at Crestwood, Dave was an excellent all-around student who especially excelled in Math and Science.  This led to an undergraduate degree at West Point in Chemistry.  His choice of major was inspired by the faculty at Crestwood.  Dave was also heavily involved in Extra-Curricular activities while in high school.  He wrestled, played soccer, ran track and was the drum major in the band.  He was also president of the Math Club and a member of the National Honor Society.  In his spare time during his high school years, Hill was an award-winning jazz band saxophonist and worked part-time at a local restaurant. 

Maj. Gen. Hill currently resides in Carlisle, PA with his wife, Chris (Heuer) Hill, also a graduate of the Crestwood High School Class of 1986. Together they have raised three children.  Now they proudly claim five, including Matthew and his wife, Hannah; Meghan and her husband, Evan; and their youngest son, Nicholas.

Jorge A. Junquera
Cuban Refugee, Senior Financial Executive, Visionary & Innovator

Junquera’s father was an integral part of the clandestine movement in Cuba to overthrow the military dictatorship of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in the 1950s. During this time, Jorge’s father supported Castro’s led revolution to create a new democratic government.  When it became clear that Castro would also govern by communist dictatorship, Mr. Junquera spoke out, which put his own life and the lives of his family in danger.

At age 12, Junquera and two of his siblings (ages 13 & 8) were put on a plane bound for Jamaica not knowing if anyone would be waiting to collect them or if they would ever see their parents again.

Junquera was reunited with his parents a year later and eventually came to Mountaintop where his father, as production manager, would oversee Dana Perfumes in the Crestwood Industrial Park.

At Crestwood, Junquera excelled as a student, athlete and leader, earning a scholarship to King’s college where he studied Finance and Spanish.

Upon graduation from King’s, Junquera was recruited by Popular Inc (and their banking subsidiaries), with headquarters in Puerto Rico, to enter their executive training program.  His ascent to the highest levels of executive management came quickly.  Fueled by an unparalleled work ethic and a vision for the future of banking, as well as Popular’s place in the international banking space, Junquera climbed to a C-Suite Executive position in the bank before age 30.

While at Crestwood, Junquera focused heavily on Math and Physics.  He was an all-scholastic Baseball and Basketball Player, President of Student Council and was a member of several school-sponsored clubs.  He also worked local part-time jobs and volunteered time at St. Jude’s.

Mr. Junquera resides in Puerto Rico with his wife, Marilú Amadeo. They have a son, Jorge Antonio and a daughter, Cristina. They also have three grandchildren.

Louis Fouché

Musician/Producer, MIT Graduate, STEM Outreach Professional

Since January 2017, Louis has worked as a saxophonist and music producer on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” for the house band Jon Batiste &; Stay Human. Louis has worked as a saxophonist, arranger, and producer for 10-time Grammy winning artist Eddie Palmieri since 2010. Louis has performed in 27 countries on six continents and has composed or performed music, appearing on Grammy-nominated (USA) and Edison Award-winning (Netherlands) albums.

Louis graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2007 with degrees in physics and chemical engineering. While an MIT student, Louis co-authored the scholarly paper “Advanced Materials: Multicomponent Patterning of Layer-by-Layer Assembled Polyelectrolyte Nanoparticle Composite Thin Films with Controlled Alignment” with Department Head and Professor Paula T. Hammond.

Louis is a co-founder and former program coordinator for the MIT Online Science, Technology, and Engineering Community (MOSTEC). MOSTEC is a 6-month blended online science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) enrichment program for high school seniors from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds. MOSTEC, currently in its tenth year, is committed to diversity and equity in STEM fields.

James Harvey

Tuskegee Airmen

James graduated from Fairview High School in 1942 as class president and valedictorian. He went on to become a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the nation’s first all African American group of military pilots.

He fought in WWII and the Korean War. James was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross along with multiple Air Medals. In all, Lieutenant Colonel Harvey would net eleven Air Medals in his Air Force career due to his many engagements with adversary forces. After the Korean War, he served as a Flight Commander, Instrument Instructor Pilot, Test Pilot, Assistant Group Operations Officer, Flight Safety Officer, and Battle Staff Training Officer for the Commanding General of the 27th NORAD Region.

Marcie Turney

Renowned Chef, Urban Revitalizer, Entrepreneur

Marcie co-owns Safran Turney Hospitality, made up of 6 restaurants and 4 retail operations. Along with her partner, Marcie has been recognized for pioneering the revitalization of a once desolate area of Center City Philadelphia into the vibrant and thriving Midtown Village. Marcie is the Executive Chef for the group's six restaurants, with three more on the way, including a restaurant in the iconic Love Park.

In 2019, Chef Turney won the “Trailblazer Award,” given out annually by Philadelphia Magazine to a woman in the Philadelphia region who is considered a pioneer in her field, has proven to be a successful leader, and has made considerable contributions to her respective peers and community.

A self-made success story, Marcie is now known to be one of the top chefs in the city. Marcie is also active in her support of Turning Points for Children, Women Against Abuse and LGBTQ initiatives.
